The Crucial Link Between Mental Health and Aesthetic Treatments

In recent years, the discourse surrounding mental health had gained siginificant traction, highlighting its importance in our overall well being. Suprisingly, theres a profound connection between mental health and aesthetics treatments, like dermal fillers, anti wrinkle procedures and various skin treatments.

This blog delves into the crucial relationship between these Aesthetics interventions and Mental health, emphasizing their impact on fostering a sense of confidence, self esteem, and overall psychological well-being.

The Link Between Aesthetic Treatments and Mental Health

1. Boosting Self-Confidence

Aesthetic treatments, such as dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle procedures, often contribute to enhancing an individual’s physical appearance. As a result, these treatments can significantly boost self-confidence and improve self-image. Feeling good about one’s appearance can positively influence mental health by reducing feelings of self-consciousness and social anxiety(1).

2. Psychological Well-being

The journey towards maintaining youthful and radiant skin through various skin treatments can have profound effects on an individual’s psychological well-being. The satisfaction derived from achieving desired skin goals can translate into improved mental health, leading to reduced stress levels and increased feelings of happiness and contentment(2)

3. Self-Esteem Enhancement

Aesthetic treatments often play a pivotal role in augmenting self-esteem. Individuals undergoing these procedures frequently report an elevation in their self-esteem levels post-treatment, attributing it to the perceived improvement in their appearance. This rise in self-esteem can contribute significantly to a positive mental outlook and increased confidence in various aspects of life(3)

4. Sense of Control and Well-being

Engaging in aesthetic treatments allows individuals to take charge of their appearance and actively participate in self-care. This sense of control over one’s physical attributes can empower individuals, fostering a greater sense of well-being and confidence in their ability to make positive changes in their lives(4).

Conclusion

The symbiotic relationship between mental health and aesthetic treatments cannot be overstated. Dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle procedures, and various skin treatments contribute significantly to enhancing self-confidence, improving self-esteem, and fostering a positive sense of well-being. However, it’s crucial to approach these treatments with a balanced perspective, ensuring that the focus remains on mental health benefits rather than solely on physical appearance. Consulting with qualified professionals and considering personal motivations can lead to a holistic approach that reaps mental health benefits alongside aesthetic enhancements.

The Importance of Safety: Non Surgical Aesthetic Treatments During Pregnancy

Introduction

The journey of pregnancy is a time of immense change and excitement, accompanied by a heightened awareness of health and well-being. As women navigate the path to motherhood, questions often arise about what is safe and permissible during this delicate period. In the realm of beauty and self-care, the consideration of non-surgical aesthetic treatments becomes paramount. This blog post delves into the reasons why non-surgical aesthetic treatments should be avoided during pregnancy, focusing on the importance of prioritizing maternal and fetal health.

The safety and well-being of both the expectant mother and the developing fetus take precedence above all else. Non-surgical aesthetic treatments, while popular for their ability to enhance one’s appearance, often involve the use of various substances and techniques that may carry risks, particularly during pregnancy.

Many non-surgical aesthetic treatments involve the use of topical products, injectables, and technologies that have not been studied extensively for their effects on pregnant women and their unborn children. The potential risks and repercussions of such treatments on fetal development and maternal health remain largely uncharted territory.

Certain aesthetic treatments, such as chemical peels and laser therapies, may involve the use of potent chemicals or technologies that can permeate the skin and potentially affect the developing fetus(1)These treatments are not formulated with the unique considerations of pregnancy in mind, making them unsuitable and potentially harmful.

During pregnancy, changes in hormonal levels and increased blood flow can affect how substances are absorbed and metabolized in the body(2)This may lead to unpredictable outcomes and heightened sensitivities to certain substances used in non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

Pregnancy is accompanied by a range of emotional and psychological changes. Engaging in aesthetic treatments during this period may inadvertently contribute to heightened stress and anxiety, as uncertainties about the effects of treatments on the baby’s health can weigh heavily on the expectant mother’s mind.

Healthcare professionals universally recommend erring on the side of caution when it comes to non-surgical aesthetic treatments during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) emphasizes that there is a lack of comprehensive research on the safety of such treatments during pregnancy(3)Therefore, it’s best to avoid treatments until more conclusive evidence is available.

Conclusion

The journey of pregnancy is a time of unparalleled beauty and transformation, both physically and emotionally. While the allure of non-surgical aesthetic treatments may beckon, it’s imperative to prioritize the safety and well-being of both the mother and the unborn child. The absence of extensive research and the potential risks associated with such treatments during pregnancy underscore the importance of embracing natural beauty and focusing on health as the ultimate goal during this cherished period.

Why Aesthetics Practioners Should Do More to Promote Sun Protection to Patients

Lucy from Aurielle Discusses Why Aesthetic Practitioners Should Do More to Promote Sun Protection to Patients

In recent years, the beauty industry has witnessed a significant rise in the popularity of aesthetic procedures. From anti-aging treatments to skin rejuvenation, there seems to be an endless array of options available for individuals seeking to enhance their appearance. However, amidst the excitement surrounding these procedures, there is one crucial aspect that often gets overlooked: sun protection. In this article, Lucy from Aurielle highlights the importance of sun protection and explains why aesthetic practitioners should prioritize educating their patients on this matter.

The harmful effects of sun exposure on the skin are well-documented. Numerous studies published in reputable journals and articles from 2015 onwards have consistently emphasized the damaging impact of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Unprotected exposure to the sun’s rays can lead to premature aging, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and even an increased risk of skin cancer (Smith, 2002; Chien et al., 2013).

As aesthetic practitioners, it is our responsibility to educate patients about the importance of sun protection. Many patients seek aesthetic treatments to address existing signs of aging, such as wrinkles and age spots. However, without proper sun protection, these treatments may provide only temporary relief, as ongoing sun damage can counteract their effectiveness.

Understanding the historical context of sunbathing practices can provide insights into the need for improved education. In the 1960s and 1970s, sunbathing and achieving a deep tan were highly popular and considered fashionable. Unfortunately, the long-term consequences of prolonged sun exposure were not widely understood or emphasized during that time. As a result, many individuals from that era now face the consequences of sun damage, including premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer.

By incorporating skin education into our consultations, we can empower our patients to make informed decisions about their skincare routine. This includes emphasizing the importance of daily sunscreen use, regardless of the weather or the season. Sunscreens with a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher can shield the skin from both UVA and UVB rays, offering comprehensive protection against sun damage (Chien et al., 2013).

Moreover, it is essential to educate patients about the proper application and reapplication of sunscreen. Many individuals mistakenly believe that applying sunscreen once in the morning is sufficient. However, studies have shown that sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming occurs (Chien et al., 2013). By providing patients with this knowledge, we can help them develop healthy sun protection habits that will benefit their skin in the long run.

In addition to sunscreen, other sun protection measures should be encouraged. Wearing protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, can help shield the skin from direct sun exposure. Seeking shade during peak sunlight hours and avoiding tanning beds are also crucial steps in minimizing sun damage.

Unfortunately, despite the well-established risks of sun exposure, certain behaviors persist. For instance, a study conducted in the UK in 2022 found that a significant number of people still use sunbeds despite the known association with increased skin cancer risk (Jones et al., 2022). This highlights the importance of addressing misconceptions and promoting safer alternatives to tanning.

Furthermore, research from 2023 reveals that a considerable proportion of individuals only wear sunscreen on hot days and neglect its daily use (Smith et al., 2023). This suggests that there is a gap in understanding regarding the consistent use of sun protection products.

To address these issues, aesthetic practitioners must take an active role in educating patients about the importance of sun protection.By sharing historical context, such as the changing understanding of sun exposure over time, we can help patients appreciate the significance of protecting their skin from harmful UV radiation. This includes dispelling misconceptions, such as the belief that sunscreen is only necessary on hot days, and emphasizing the importance of daily sun protection.

In conclusion, as aesthetic practitioners, we have a responsibility to educate our patients at the consultation stage about the importance of sun protection. By emphasizing the harmful effects of sun exposure and incorporating skin education into our consultations, we can empower individuals to prioritize sun protection as an integral part of their skincare routine. Through consistent efforts to promote sun protection, we can contribute to healthier, more radiant skin for our patients, and ultimately, help them maintain their youthful appearance for years to come.

Mental Health Awareness Week

My story for #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek.  🗣️ 🙌🏻

In 2021 I shared with you all my personal mental health journey and here it is again with a few little updates ☺️
Wow can you actually believe it’s May 2023? I still feel like the last 3 years have been a bit of a crazy blur ! And now time seems to be going super quick !
Lockdown 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 has changed people’s life’s forever and has definitely changed mine! It  pushed my own mental health to the limit 🧠.
When I look back at old messages and images of how I was 3 years ago I have completely changed and gone from a once negative super anxious person to one of those people who is super positive about absolutely anything and sees the best in everything. Don’t get me wrong I still have bad days and have to push myself to positive which can feel like a battle between myself in my head.
The aim of this post is to raise awareness and know that mental health can be very hard to see but it can be heard- and speaking out is by the far the best thing you can do.
Over the last couple of years I have learnt that we are our own worst enemies and  It’s easy to be hard on yourself when you’re anxious . The thing is, being nasty to yourself doesn’t make anything better, it only makes you feel even more stressed. 🙇🏻‍♂️
⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have learnt that our mental health must come first, you are a PRIORITY! The first thing I do in the morning is Prioritise my own mental health! I meditate, visualize what I would like my day to be like and go an my @The secret app – ( best app ever) and do my gratitude and affirmations and I read normally a self help book or some research to do with work : ) This instantly puts me in the right frame of mind to start the day ! I also exercise this may not be at the start of the day but exercising really makes me feel a million times better if I’m feeling a bit anxious or overwhelmed.
You must take that time for you! Right now just rest, watch tv, have a bath, go for a walk , be kind to yourself and know that it is okay to need a break ❤️🙌🏻🌟🌾
So here’s my story…….
If you know me now or actually even if you knew me a couple of years back you would think I was a super confident, bubbly young woman. However that  was very far from the truth.
I suffered with anxiety and depression and it ruled my life !! It affected my everyday activities, family life, finances and friendships 😔
Anxiety seems like such a buzz word but it’s REAL and it’s crippling that feeling of your stomach tightening, your throat closing up and that overwhelming feeling of worry about everything in your life that makes you feel like your not good enough, you can’t do enough is paralysing. The strength of putting on a brave face and acting like your ok because that’s what we feel like is the right thing to do.
For me anxiety plagued me it gave me negative thoughts day and day out and I felt like I was stuck in this deep dark whole that had no return.
Anxiety it’s a word that has been around me for a few years and one that I hated to be associated with. I don’t have anxiety I used to say there’s something wrong with me but I don’t know what it is.
Back in 2016 Originally when my symptoms started I had this pain in my stomach this tightening and this lump in my throat
I was adamant I had a stomach problem and had loads of test and procedures which ruled anything serious out.
At the time I wasn’t happy in a few aspects of my life and my mind was fulled with negative thoughts from others and myself on a daily basis.
After many many tests and chats with my doctors they diagnosed me with anxiety and started me on anti depressants along with anxiety medication to lower my heart rate and blood pressure. They also advised CBT.
When lockdown hit, my mental health plummeted, not only was I trying to be a good mum to a 2 year old and keep her happy and entertained my relationship which hadn’t been right for a couple of years had come to an end, financially I had zero money, no support, no government grants, my anxiety was at an all time high.
  • How would I make money ?
  • Would I get clients back ?
  • Can I afford to keep my business ?
  • Can I afford to keep my house ?
  • Is there anyway out of this?
I was now a single mum , with no income and a little one to look after.
The negative thoughts were raging around my head ! I wasn’t a good mum, my business will end. I will never have any money, I will loose the house! Everyone will be better off without you.
I knew I had 2 choices –
– Let the anxiety win or step up and
– Make my situation work.
So what did I do I know I needed to get these negative thoughts out of my head so I started to exercise everyday this instantly made me feel better
I spoke out , I reached out to a couple of my closest friends and talked to them everyday on the phone
Meditation I meditated for even just 5 minutes helped calm me
I started being grateful for all the things I had in my life – my family, my friends, the weather etc
I started affirmations !
”I am strong, I am confident, I am happy , I make loads of money it comes easily and freely into my life, I can achieve anything”
After a while I felt free. Like I was killing off my anxiety and becoming me again.  I came off my medication ( please don’t do this without advise from a doctor)and started to feel motivated to make my life work.
Now I needed to make money so I did ! I wasn’t working at the time so I pushed myself into helping patients with their face and skin concerns and made a full time wage booking patients in for treatments and assisting them
with medical grade skincare .
And here I am 2 years on still here, still fighting the anxiety as and
when it creeps it’s ugly head I found after loosing my dad it came back worse than ever ! This led me to become very emotionally detached wanting to stay in and not see anyone and led me down a path of of emotionally eating I put on just over a stone and a half and went from a size 10-14 ! ( I will get more into my weight journey over the next month or so) i am so so grateful to be here and that my anxiety won’t win.
I did that !
Yes I have had help, chatted to friends and family and had therapy.
So Just a friendly reminder for anyone who has been struggling lately.
You got this !!!
Anxiety is REAL and can be a very hard thing for some people to understand especially if they have never had it.
But I understand! I get it !!!
My job is never just about making you feel better on the outside it’s always about making you feel better on the inside and I am here for all of my clients with any aspect of your mental health you want to talk about !
I’m here and I’m listening !  🥰✨

I’ve completed the Lee Walker Academy!

Spending the past 18 months being mentored by Lee Walker at his Academy in Liverpool has been a whirlwind experience.

I have spent this time learning and expanding my knowledge in the following areas; temple, forehead, mid face, periorbital, perioral, chin and jawline, the difference between the male and female face, advanced botox, nose and complications.

What originally was a 10 month course was extended through lockdown due to COVID and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

Why did I choose the Lee Walker Academy?

If you want to give patients the best results, you need be the best and learn from the best, right?

Lee Walker is one of the best aesthetic practitioners in medical aesthetics, hosting seminars and lectures all over the world teaching best practice to everyone, he focuses heavily on research based practice.

Being a research nurse previously, I understand the importance of evidence based practice and following the research and evidence to ensure you are given the best possible treatments.

 What have I learnt ?

I have learnt the in depth facial anatomy as well as the importance of the consultation process and patient selection.

I have learnt how to inject every area of the face in the best possible way to ensure the best possible outcome.

Safety is always priority and by learning Lee Walker’s techniques, this has shown me how to do so with the lowest possible risk as well as showing me how to manage all aspects of complications if they are to arise.

What have I changed in clinic?

Consultations
My consultations are longer, I have found that a full facial approach is key to a good consultation and as part of my consultations the full face will always be considered when discussing any treatments you may wish to have.

Safety

Safety has always been my number 1 priority. I am registered with SaveFace UK and have also added extra safety measures and protocols to refer patients direct to hospital if any complications arise that I am unable to take care of in clinic.

Reviews
It is so important to me to follow up with my clients and check that you are happy. Reviews can be requested at any stage by patients,  however as good practice  all mid-face treatments, temple and tear trough will have a follow up review included with their treatments.

Going forward…

In November I will be going on Lee Walker’s 2 Day Cadaver Course where I go even deeper in skin anatomy, with an up-close view on all layers and structures within the skin.

This will give me knowledge on Facial Anatomy & Complications and will allow me to dissect & inject areas within the face even further.

Let’s answer some of your FAQ’s when it comes to lip fillers 💋

Lip fillers are one of the most popular treatments with us here at Aurielle Aesthetics.  The art of elegant enhancements enables us to create volume and definition, reduce “smokers lines” and correct asymmetry without leaving you with a “trout pout”

We’ve put together some of the most frequently asked questions about lip fillers to help you understand what to expect; ⠀⠀

Q: Will It Hurt?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A: Believe it or not, the process of lip filler injections can be remarkably pain free. We use numbing cream prior to treatment and the injection is done using a very, very fine needle. ⠀

Q: Do My Lips Bruise?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A: Your lips will likely be swollen after the procedure. You may also notice some redness or bruising at the injections sites, which is normal⠀⠀

Q: Is 1ml Going To Be Too Much?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A: It’s a common misconception that dermal filler is going to dramatically change your appearance with the very first treatment. In actual fact, 1ml of dermal filler is just enough to create a very subtle result that clients can then build upon over time (if that’s your goal).⠀⠀

Q: Will They Look Natural?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A: Our priority is to keep people guessing! We also consider side profiles to ensure we create harmony and balance.⠀

Q: Is it safe?

A: Lip fillers are a cosmetic treatment, and like all medical procedures, there is always a chance that something could go wrong. Which is why we stress the importance of going to a medically trained practitioner and have your treatment performed within a clinical environment so that if on the rare occasion a vascular occlusion happens, you are in a safe environment with an experienced medic who can carry out emergency treatment.

Q: What is Lip Filler Made of?

A: Lip fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA), which is a substance that naturally occurs in the dermis of the skin. It can be found in many beauty products, as it is a hydrophilic molecule, meaning that it attracts water. It can hold up to 1000 x its own weight in water making it an excellent hydrator. Some common brands that we use in the clinic are restylane and teosyal which are premium dermal fillers.

Having lip filler treatments can be uncomfortable, cause swelling, bruising and pain post treatment.

Did you know that we have our own Lip Balm that has been specifically designed to help ease the soreness and discomfort of lip filler treatments by providing natural relief and speeding up the healing process.

Auri Balm products are all cruelty-free,vegan and naturally handmade.  This makes them a great option for anyone looking for some quick, natural relief.

Here’s our aftercare tips for when you have Lip Filler;

⠀⠀⠀

  1. Your lips will likely be swollen after the procedure. You may also notice some redness or bruising at the injections sites, which is normal. Most side effects will be minor, and you will be able to resume most activities once the procedure is done.
  2. Apply ice to your lips afterward using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease the swelling, itching, bruising, and any other pain.
  3. Auri Balm has been specifically designed to help ease the soreness and discomfort of lip filler treatments by providing natural relief and speeding up the healing process.
  4. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you get lip or any other dermal fillers. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate from exercise may make swelling or bruising worse. It’s fine to engage in light activity like walking.
  5. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help your body heal.
  6. Eat plenty of hydrating fruits and vegetables and try to avoid excess sodium, which may worsen swelling.
  7. Avoid high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas, or heated exercise classes for 48 hours after treatment. High heat can make swelling more pronounced.

SPF: Why it’s important, why you should use it, and how it works.

Who should use SPF we hear you ask- in short, the answer is everybody.

The short answer is everyone! Men, women and children over 6 months of age should use sunscreen every day. This includes people who tan easily and those who don’t — remember, your skin is damaged by sun exposure over your lifetime, whether or not you burn.

Babies under the age of 6 months are the only exceptions; their skin is highly sensitive. Stay out of the sun; shade structures and sun-protective clothing are the best ways to safeguard infants.

9 Lip Filler Myths Busted

❌Myth 1

A foreign substance is being injected into my lips

This is not the case, as long as your medical practitioner uses brands containing Hyaluronic Acid. A natural substance found in our bodies, this simply reintroduces it into our bodies. This stimulates our natural HA to work hard in providing a fuller, plumper look.

❌Myth 2

I cant wait to show of my new pout tomorrow !

Highly unlikely, most lip swelling happens immediately and continues into the next day. Swelling usually resolves within 2 days although this can last for up to 2 weeks.

❌Myth 3

Only people with thin lips get fillers

The most common use for lip fillers is to plump out thinner lips, but they do so much more, fillers can also contour, hydrate dry lips, define a cupids bow and add symmetry.

❌Myth 4

All lip fillers look the same and unnatural

Not if you choose a well trained injector – The British Society of Aesthetics recommends Nurses,Doctors and Dentists .These medical professionals have had years of experience with injecting patients.

❌Myth 5

I’m too young/old for fillers

Fillers are known for their anti-ageing qualities. The hyaluronic acid triggers collagen in the skin to rejuvenate the chosen areas. You can have fillers at any age over 18 years.

❌Myth 6

My lips will feel strange afterwards

Another popular lip filler myth, apart from the swelling after your treatment your lips will feel back to normal usually within 2 weeks.

❌Myth 7

When the filler wears off will my lips be even smaller than before

You can stop having lip fillers completely without any side effects, your lips will return to their natural size.

❌Myth 8

Lip fillers are irreversible

As long as you have hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, the effects will not be permanent. Your body naturally breaks down the filler over time, if you are unhappy with your results there is always the possibility to instantly dissolve the filler using a substance called Hyalase.

❌Myth 9

With the right injector it doesn’t matter what fillers they use

This is not the case, there are a range of fillers out there and some may use the cheapest, always ask what products are being injected into your lips, we recommend Restylane and Juvederm.

❓Why did I bruise ?❓💉

Bruising is one of the most common side effects with having dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. In fact one of the most common side effect in non surgical aesthetics is bruising at the injection site. There are some conflicting research studies that show that bruising occurs in roughly 19% – 24% of patients, while others have concluded that figure to be as high as 68%.

Bruising can seem to occur based on a number of factors.

Injection type

Dermal fillers are more likely to cause bruising as they penetrate deeper into the skin adding volume and definition rather than anti-wrinkle injections which are Injected onto the surface of the skin.

Drugs

Some medical drugs have been known to make bruising worse, it is important to never stop any medical prescribed drug and always check with your doctor first. Drugs aren’t the only culprit for making bruising worse, Vitamin and minerals and even certain types of foods can make your bruising worse.

Expert practitioner

Finally, choosing an expert, board-certified provider to perform your treatment is key to making sure you don’t experience any unnecessary bruising. An expert injector will apply an anesthetic cream, also known as numbing cream to your face prior to injections so as to constrict the blood vessels and make bruising less likely. Anesthetic creams will also keep you more comfortable throughout the procedure.

An expert injector will also position you in the best way possible to avoid excess bruising around the injection site.

Area treated

If you are getting injectable treatments to reduce the appearance of nasolabial and marionette lines these areas are very prone to bruising. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to decrease the likelihood of this occurring.

Post procedure

After your procedure, you should avoid going to the gym or doing extreme exercise. Exercise will increase your blood pressure and heart rate which in turn increases your blood flow, this will make it harder for any capillaries damaged by the injection to heal. Increases your healing time.

Here are a few of my tips on how to reduce your risk of bruising

-No garlic 1-2 days before treatment.

  • No alcohol 2-3 days before treatment, even 1 drink will massively increase your risk of bruising.
  • Stop taking: (unless medically necessary)

*Asprin

*Ibuprofen

*Vitamin E

*Omega 3

*Ginseng

  • Try eating pineapple 2-3 times for 1-2 days prior to your treatment (anecdotal evidence only)
  • Try taking Arnica tablets*up to 1 week prior to your appointment, you can also purchase one of our Arnica natural healing vegan lip balms for £5.00 which are proven to help reduce bruising
  • Ice before and after treatment
  • No gym on the day off and 2 days post treatment
